Goodbye Ugly Paper Towel Holder

Good morning and happy Friday! Today we are talking about "things." Everybody has a "thing" that they don't like, but usually have to deal with. For me, it is paper towel holders. I don't like looking at them. I know, it's silly, but it's my "thing". Now before I get into my favorite hack ever I have to tell you that I think the reason this came to me is because I've been working out again. I swear all of the extra oxygen going to my brain is actually helping the creative purpose. Score 1 for exercise. But I digress.

Since I can't stand looking at paper towels and paper towel holders, I thought the perfect solution would be one of those that you hang on a cabinet door. I grabbed one from the Container Store years ago and have hated it since the day I put it on. It does it's job, but since it is on the cabinet door, it clangs every time you open the door. If that wasn't enough, you can see where it hooks on the door.

Yesterday, after going to the gym, I was working on the dimensions for the pull-out trays I'm planning to build. I opened the door and CLANG. Ugh. So I grabbed it off the door and thought there has to be a better way to do this. It took all of two seconds and I figured it out. Why not just mount it to the cabinet base. Well duh, Jill.  Why it took me 5 years to think of this is beyond me. With the idea in mind I went to work.

I grabbed my metal drill bit and drilled two holes in the holder base/handle. I used a 3/16" drill bit made for metal. I would suggest you place a piece of wood under the holder base/handle so you don't drill a hole in the surface below.

Next I took two small wood screws I had and used them to attach the paper towel holder to the cabinet base.

And that, my friends, is it. It took me 5 minutes and I no longer have to look at the ugly paper towel holder (except when I open the door, of course). I also don't have to listen to the annoying clang every time I open the cabinet door!

You can see a tiny bit of metal where the hand grip is on the door, but it's just a very little bit.

So what do you think? Best hack ever for a paper towel holder? It definitely is for me!
